Darktable | How to apply a mask from a treatment

Is it possible in darktavle to create a mask for a certain tool not from the parametric mask module, but from a processed image, or from a 3dlut file?
I recorded an example video of how I did it in 3dlut Creator, to make it clear what I mean.

This photo https://discuss.pixls.us/t/girl-on-the-sea/30917?u=estaf treated it this way. Well, of course, there were a few other manipulations, but partially applied this method as well. The result is below.

No layers and no way to load masks…only the tools in the modules and the mask manager as far as I know…

Why is it a shame?

it’s sad
Sometimes you can do very interesting things with such a mask.

Raster masks exist, so it may be possible to convince the developers to add a new operation to the mask manager, allowing you to load a bitmap. However, I think masks are monochrome, and need to match the image dimensions.

Maybe open a feature request and see?

These are not raster masks. They are style masks. Either masks from another tool’s actions, or masks from a lut file, as in the example in the clip.
In darktable, if you take the parametric masks mode, you can create them by restricting only certain channels with the controls. But, if you add the ability to create a mask from a style (saved darktable action history to a style), you can achieve more advanced mask creation options.

Later I will show another example. A simpler example, to make it clearer what I’m talking about.

OK, I’ll admit, I did not watch the video. I had a look now, but didn’t really understand what was going on. Perhaps that simpler video you said was coming will clarify things.

There are two ways to get new features into darktable:

  1. you code it, offer it up for review, and, if the others like it, it gets accepted and merged;
  2. you raise a feature request, some developer likes the idea, does the coding, and then we jump to point #1

So, either way, you’ll end up at

Discussing in the forum is a good start, but is not enough.

shame

/ˈʃeɪm/

noun

1

[noncount] : a feeling of guilt, regret, or sadness that you have because you know you have done something wrong

[noncount] : ability to feel guilt, regret, or embarrassment

[+] Example sentences

3

[noncount] : dishonor or disgrace

4

[singular] : something that is regretted : pity

I’m not sure why there should be any shame in regards to how darktable works.

It’s meaning 4: “pity (too bad), that darktable lacks this feature”

In Russian (originally) I wanted to say this:
“Обидно, досадно, ну ладно”.

There is also this translation:
It’s a pity, but still well and good, I don’t care too much.

[off]Until 2008, I studied English for three years and even wanted to leave Russia. But then I didn’t have time to practice. I fell in love with a girl, and abandoned everything. Then she left me. And somehow I gave up on everything. I was nervous for about 10 years and had nothing to do))) Tell God your plans so that he will laugh)
And now I’ve even started using an English interpreter. At 48, I’m not going anywhere.
Excuse me for my attitude to your language. Honestly I didn’t want to offend anyone.[/off]

Okay. Can I at least save one tool’s mask to apply to another tool?
The mask I made for exposure (as an example), apply to the local contrast tool. Or do I need to write down all the slider parameters so that I can reproduce them later in another tool?
I am trying to find in the program how to save the mask preset and can not find a solution how to do this.

or more precisely, how do I make a mask so that it projects onto certain tools that I set it? sometimes this is important.
Okay. I’m going to bed. It’s kind of daytime in the States, but it’s kind of quiet. It looks like Europe is all over the topic of discussion. The U.S. are/is asleep. At night you write something and silence. During the day, when it’s daytime in Moscow, everyone is active. Maybe everyone works during the day and talks here in the evenings…

This is the raster mask…So you can use the mask of any module as long as it comes before the desired module in the pipeline…so you can even make a dummy exposure module with no changes and make a mask. Exposure comes early so you can reuse this mask in any module that comes after it…Select the raster mask and the drop down and select which one to use…

Cool. All done. Found it. I never would have thought it was a raster mask. Thanks.

About the 3dlut mask (from 1:50).

The mask at about 4:00 looks really rough. You should be able to get a better mask in darktable using the parametric and drawn mask feature available in every module. In addition, when the next version comes out in a few weeks, there will be color matching between photos.

The color processing in 3dlut creator is crude and without masks.

I have no idea what you’ve been talking about this entire thread then.

3dlut creator was an example not of beauty and health (have artifacts, no artifacts And so on), but an example of the very idea of applying any corrections as masks.
For example, you take the tool filmic rgb and process an image with it, but (then) the result is not applied to the image, but as a mask for a tool, say, color calibration.
