Darktable workflow video

There is a good beginners workflow video in the reddit FOSSPhotography subreddit.

Yep, from our very own @David_LaCivita I believe!

Thanks for making this, @David_LaCivita!

Superb. Thanks @David_LaCivita for exposing (see what I did there) your RAW workflow. Given Darktable’s incredible flexibility it does mean a lot of the modules are inscrutable if you haven’t had time to go through a lot of documentation (or possibly used other RAW processing software).

I wouldn’t say inscrutable, but apparently redundant that become confuse to use. A fine example of this are the noise reduction or color correction modules. Sometimes is easier to ignore a lot and use what’s more confortable, even if not the best or most optimized module to use.

Thanks! I didn’t think it was that good. I’ll try to by a bit more brief if I do another.

Nice overview! There are a few nitpicks though:

  • it is “lighttable” and not “lightroom”.
  • the filmroll list in the collection module is not ordered by when you used it the last time but by folder name.
  • in profiled denoise, the lens isn’t part of the profile as it doesn’t matter.
  • also in profiled denoise, the “mode” setting isn’t directly related to which kind of noise to battle (chroma or luma). It just happens to be that for luma the non-local means works better while chroma prefers the wavelets. To actually limit the instances to one or the other type you have to also set the blend mode. And instead of “HSV color” I would suggest “color” for chroma noise. For luma noise you want “lightness”. Oh, and put the chroma denoising first (that is, lower) than the luma one. For more info on that see the usermanual.
  • when using equalizer, you are trying to bump fine details by moving the slider on the right most band (the dark bg part in the eq module) while zoomed out. Note that those bands are zoom related. As you can see when you have zoomed in later you have more bands on the right, as there are even finer details visible now. So in essence you didn’t sharpen the finest details but the middle fine ones. I know that you know about the bands as you mention them when showing the noise curve, It’s just that your sharpening is affected by that, too.

I guess that’s it. Really minor things that I just wanted to point out.

@houz Very good points!
I wish “lighttable” rolled off the tongue as easily as “lightroom.”

What is “HSV”…? The user manual you linked to says:

The “non-local means” instance should be combined with blend mode “lightness” or “HSV lightness”; the “wavelet” instance with blend mode “color” or “HSV color”.

I thought I did mention to use the chroma first but if I do a denoise focused video I’ll be sure to mention it.

I do understand the banding in the equalizer but couldn’t explain it better. Your description helps.

Thank you for the pointers!
