I have an image that contains 2 areas of text that I find distracting and would like to ‘fog-over’ without being obvious.
I tried ‘sensorize’ but the results were crude and even more obvious than prior to processing.
I then turned to the d & s function that worked very well but I ran into a problem.
When I applied 2 instances of masks to the image and then selected the preset … both masks were deleted. A single mask works just fine.
Anybody else see this … or is it only in my version?
Manjaro/Arch/XFCE/dt-4.7.0+361~g7d06f7ce91
I think I understand what you are doing… 2 instances of DS module… add first with a mask and a preset then a second instance with a mask and use the same preset?? Just not fully clear what the two instances of masks is… I am not at my computer to try but maybe name the first instance before you do the second one and if you apply the same preset then it shouldn’t clear it?? Again I’m not sure from your comments exactly what you are doing and in what order…
Fairly simple really … assume an image of a car park. 2 cars have licensee plates showing that need too be ‘censorized’. The censorize function works very well but creates a mess that is even more obvious than the numbers … so, as an alternative we use d&s … now 2 masks are used covering the plates … voila! … when the second mask is established the function resets.
By the way … d&s works quite well for this application …at least for the first mask.
You need to explain, step by step, what you are doing. You are leaving out essential information here.
So one instance of the module and when you draw the second mask there is an issue??
I’m not seeing that ??
If you hit a preset after you draw that mask that will reset the mask as its not part of the preset…
Again I feel like I am missing something in your explanation…
Some more testing from my side. The problem appears to come from the use of the presets. The following is my revised flow.
- Open image
- Open d&s
- Draw 2 simple line masks
- Set the sliders to heavily blur the 2 areas
- Good result
- Try to use one of the ‘presets’ as an alternate
- d&s Function is immediately reset.
This is normal. Selecting a preset will reset the module, including any masks. Simply select the preset first, before creating the masks.
And if it happens, check the mask manager. Drawn masks are kept, even when they are not used anymore
(the masks are stored with the image, they are still present after program restart).
Parametric masks are not handled by the mask manager, they are lost on module reset.
Can you explain that? This module should be able to hide anything… Maybe some wrong parameters?
I tried again and was able to fully hide the text with black text on a brown background. Black on white is a bit more difficult
When you say something like this at least a screenshot might help to reinforce your comments…
Its easy to obscure stuff with colorize…you can draw any solid color overlay where ever you want …so that is one way or lots of ways to blur things
Not sure what exactly you mean here … the thread meanders a bit but you are trying to blur license plates on cars in an image correct??
I initially tried-out censorize on a license plate and did not get , what I considered to be, acceptable results. Theimage that I needed to correct was less demanding … see below
and
This I found to be quite acceptable. Trying to blur further caused the edges of the chair-back to loose definition.
The second element in the image was on a wall with no edge problems and that worked even better.
You are probably missing the fact that you can also pixelize the text:
With blur 35 & pixelize 33 I get:
My object was to totally hide the text. The pixelize route, in my opinion, makes the text area even more objectionable in pictorial circumstances. My use was in a street scene where the text drew ones eye.
Anyway, you are right, used correctly it does a great job.
Wouldn’t the retouch module be a better choice then? Either copying in texture, or painting in colour, perhaps with a blur added…
The retouch module would be another approach, maybe.
However … in the example that used, the text was located on the back of a chair and there was no reasonable replacement area.
Maybe post a PlayRaw for people to experiment with?
