ilia3101:
Currently experimenting with a hybrid approach: geometric compression (like in my earlier work) as a first step (leaving headroom, say 5x above 1.0), and then using per-channel compression as a finishing step, compressing it down to the final 0.0-1.0 range
That sounds interesting! I should read back through this thread, but what software are you working with? Something completely scratch-built or modified rawtherapee/darktable/G’Mic…?
Edit:
I thought this would be an interesting one to try the new sigmoid functionality in darktable (running 4.5+1093). I haven’t fully got my head around it yet, but seems to work well even in my hands.

That is excellent, except for the upper stem being completely blue.

just to refresh everyone’s eyes so you can better tell the shades of red/orange apart:

I think my edit from Sept. 2021 is ugly:
So I tried again (to fail better).

ilia3101:
Very difficult orange flower pic.
My workinprogress program, preserving tonality (but failing to preserve colourfulness, unnaturally pale):
Rawtherapee 5.8 auto-matched curve, 4400K, very posterised:
Lightroom, also 4400K:
I would say lightroom’s average shade of orange looks most like the actual flower, but this is just a case of lucky clipping.
While how a capture opened and edited with various apps looks is interesting, I like to look at an original image converted by RawDigger which allows no editing at all:
Looks pretty good to me …

Good idea. I did the same with Image Magick, and got a similarly good rendition.

Despite the age of this Play_Raw - this has been quite a learning curve.
My (simpler) 2nd attempt using what I have learnt from other folks *.xmp
My original *xmp was (37.0 KB) whereas, this one is only (15.8 KB).

Fairly basic edit. The main thing is that I used gamut compression in color calibration to bring the red channel under control.
Same as before, but I then used the channel mixer to make the flowers more orange.
Both done in darktable. Use the JPEG as sidecar, if you want to see how I did it.

Tough. Don’t know whether I prefer the flowers red (with filmic) or more orange (with sigmoid)
