digikam with network storage--always having to "find new items"

I’ve recently switched to an immutable Linux distro (Aurora), which may or may not be relevant. As a result, I’m not using the Flatpak version of digikam 8.8.0.

My collection is on a network server. I have an alias “Pictures” in my home directory pointing to my pictures directory in the mounted file system (i.e., /home/mike/Pictures is a symlink to /mnt/server/pictures).

The digikam collection points to /home/mike/Pictures.

If start digikam while the remove file system isn’t mounted, of course I see no photos. If I shutdown digikam and mount the filesystem, when digikam starts up it needs to re-scan the whole collection, which takes hours.

I tried changing the collection type to “removable storage”, but that does not seem to have changed anything.

Besides always remembering to make sure my file system is mounted (good luck with that!), how can I address this?
