Hello -
If not aware, Colorado passed a digital accessibility law in 2021 ( HB21-1110 ) to follow the WCAG accessibility standards and we’re working to meet the requirements associated with that statute. The requirements include having a digital accessibility statement and as necessary a plan for providing access to a digital “thing” if it doesn’t meet the WCAG standards. We’re currently assessing all technology used by the Town of Castle Rock including the GIMP software.
I recognize that everyone at GIMP is a volunteer, but does GIMP have a WCAG Compliance Report or other roadmap plans you can share about the GIMP software and conformance with digital accessibility standards? I’ve browsed your website and didn’t find a VPAT or other any information on this topic. If the answer is “no” that’s helpful information for us in our due diligence activities on this topic.
Thank you,
Mark Maloney
WCAG is about the web, gimp is a desktop software and does not run “on the web” or in a web browser. Are you talking about the gimp website? If not, can you please be more clear?
The law in Colorado applies the WCAG standard to all technology (Web, desktop programs, and mobile applications).
@CastleRockPM Hi! Do you have an example of a digital accessibility statement that other desktop programs your government uses has?
That would help us determine if we already have documentation that meets the requirements - and if not, it could be included as a reference on the web issue tracker to help develop such a statement. Thanks!
In 2015 i wrote https://www.gimp.org/about/ITI-VPAT.doc if that helps.
Some aspects of WCAG apply and not others - for example, if you are creating an image, it won’t yet have alt text. The screen reader was tested only on Linux; keyboard access is extensive, however. In general accessibility is important to us; we hope GIMP 3 will be even better.

Awesome! I’m glad we have that. Now we just need to make it easier to access.
Thank you. I appreciate you, the information provided, and the effort taken in responding to my request.
