I don’t think I have time for a playraw today, and would not know where to start on this one. But there are some really great edits already, from people that do :slight_smile:

Just because I don’t really like the bright gap, where the sky comes true. I find it very distracting.

Of course you can dimm it down, to have it somewhat blue. But this leads in my eyes to an unnatural look. on @gwbarn’s edit it works for me better than on @dqpcoxeas’, where the leafes have massive halos. Still I find the blue sky not really fitting. It stays just a heavy distractor because of colour and brightness - I tried it for my self and gave in. On my first edit I tried to adapt it to the other brighter parts of the picture but that didn’t really work out as well (at least for me). For some reasons on my B/W render I find ind more pleasant.

So going cinematic was the only way to be really satisfied with this part of this otherwise lovely shot.

I think mine came out pretty similar to others. Maybe a little lighter in the shadows, as all that dust is likely to diffuse a lot of light.:

I did quite a bit of work to draw attention away from the details in the trees and to focus more on the light. I also tried not to lean into the hdr/everything-is-sharp look, since that would spread attention more evenly across the image IMO.

Started with darktable and finished with a trip through SpektraFilm.

I don’t know a good way to share the edits with that workflow. darktable edits are still embedded in the photo (just confirmed I can load from it). Exported from darktable as tif in linear pro photo, and in SpektraFilm it’s Kodak Ektar 100 on Endura Premier paper, -4 on the print y filter shift (whatever that means, ha, makes “more gold”), grain disabled, diffusion applied, and maybe something else I’m forgetting.

Is that a permissable work-around? Of course, given the very work-in-progress state of SpektraFilm, I don’t know how long those settings will work for other people.

Yes, those two and Contrast Equaliser. But I did use drawn and parametric masks to focus on the centre, light tones

Hi @Kland wonderful photograph!

As I haven’t been there at the right moment I had no idea about what it ‘should’ look like.

So I choose a golden interpretation. And played around with multiply mode as I have hardly any experience with it.

And I listened quite well - as I often do - to @Popanz’ remarks, this time about cropping.

By the way, it is only a bit more than one year ago I started using dt watching exactly the vid you looked at :slight_smile:

The fun with play_raw is that the player has no attachment to the reality at the moment the picture was taken. That gives a freedom advantage. It might very well be that besides being beautiful - a certain interpretation is way out from the photographers experience. Thus rendering it nearly impossible to ‘accept’ as realistic.

What a great use of tone eq and multiply blend mode. It is a great application of the module on this image and I hope you don’t mind me copying the idea for my edit.
I have gone for a more sparkly version than yours but the tones have been tamed from their extremes without the need for additional tone mapping with something like AGX.

I have included a bit of the sky but toned it to match the rest of the image as I don’t think blue fits well in the colour scheme. I know this is wrong according to the laws of sunlight but I will stick with my choice.

I tried to clone out the sky after cropping low enough. There was still some blue sky visible through the gaps in the leaves that I tried to clone out. Not a good job but let me know what you think.
