DT 3.0.2 install help please; Ubuntu 20.04

Although I’m not new to Ubuntu, I’m a neophyte when it comes to installing software via tar etc.
Mainly I photo edit on ubuntu and the repositories include DT 3.0.1 but my camera is supported as of 3.0.2
Rather than wait for the repositories to be updated, I went to the DT site to get the instructions but still it has not gone well for me. It warns you not to use the github autogenerated tarball but to use “our” .xz which I believe I found on github in the ‘Assets’ list on the page bottom. I assume this is what i want to get according to DT website.
So, this is downloaded and extracted. Now, I’m stuck and not sure just how to proceed to get it installed.
As you can tell, I may need pretty precise instructions. Your patience is appreciated! (BTW, i also have a Win10 laptop mainly for work for which the 3.0.2 install process was ever so simple. i prefer however to do photo editing on my desktop which is U 20.04)

See the section “Install from source” at this page: install | darktable

There’s a regularly updated PPA on UbuntuHandbook
darktable release : Panda Jim
It has 3.0.2 for Ubuntu 20.04
I just wait for the OBS update.

Someone should open a bug against the package in openSUSE Buildservice so that the Debian build will be fixed.

https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/graphics/darktable

I don’t have any privileges in that projects.

Perhaps @darix can grant you or one of us some permissions so things can be continued. If not then maybe we start another?

How exactly are you stuck? I went through this process for the first time recently so perhaps I can help.

He already has permissions where it is needed and fixed it

Thanks @darixl

I didn’t do anything

Modest too!

There’s also a flatpak that works well and is up-to-date.
