DT 4.2.1 flatpak crashes when generating thumbnail (nlmeans problem ?)

Hi. Strangely, 4.2.1 started to crash when I import and build thumbnails for images processed with negadoctor, more precisely at thumbnail creation it appears. Running Mint 21.1 (32 GB of RAM). I tried importing these images from a brand new Linux Kubuntu 23.04, with empty DT database and brand new install of DT 4.2.1 flatpak. The crash occurs the same, but not for the same images set… I tried many times by deleting the data and library db. So lets say I have set A,B,C of photos. If I change the order of importing (one set at a time), the crash does not occur for the same set
Is there any way I can look a some logs to pinpoint the nature of the problem and provide some info to the devs ?
Note :

  • all files can be opened without problems in Rawtherapee (obviously not applying DT processing)
  • it was working some weeks ago. There has been some “updates” recently of the DT 4.2.1 flatpak (strange because the version number did not change).

DT is a complicated app with lots of dependencies and those dependencies get updated.

Can you run flatpak run org.darktable.Darktable -d all in a terminal and then see of you can repeat the crash?

Looks like all CPU, can you confirm you have ooenCL disabled or unavailable? And can you post a problematic file and sidecar?

As for problematic file, the problem is that there is none… in the sense that it never crashes at the same file. I will try to isolate something. Does the log I have shown give any clues about what is happening ?

The last row in both is dealing with nlmeans. The Issue 12662 tried to address issues with nlmeans in the SSE2 path. Testing this on darktable master might be useful to know if the PR already fixed this for 4.4 or if there is still another issue.

I just installed the latest Branch (darktable_4.3.0~git1954.80bfae38-1+9840.1_amd64.deb) on Kubuntu 23.04. Erased all the DB and then tried to import my 2000 pictures processed with negadoctor (all have associated .xmp). After 323 pictures imported and seeing the thumbnail (small) being built gradually, DT crashed, again with the last lines of the logs being about nlmeans

Then you should report an issue in github. A current terminal log (maybe -d common) and a sample image would be helpful.

I am not familiar with github and bug reporting. I will try to find how. And unfortunately, the crash is not systematic and occur randomly, so I cannot find only 1 image to produce the problem

ok, i’ll do. I managed to isolate the problem with only 4 images I have put here :

It is random, so I had to play for 10 minutes doing this
→ erase library.db, data.db
→ darktable -d all
→ loop
___->load one or many of these 4 images
___-> remove all of them
→ rinse and repeat until segmentation fault

Sometimes I zoom out thumbnail while they are building

This bug is very bad for me as I cannot access thousands of pictures that are important for me (family souvenirs)

A fix was merged into master. It’s hard to recreate this issue, so more testing from different users will be helpful to ensure it is really fix.

I think your issue is different (still nlmeans) since it is happening at thumbnails. I think you should start a new GitHub issue. Since you can reproduce maybe share a backtrace.

@g-man are you sure? Tbh it sounds exactly the same to me.

This is what I’m doing:

  1. clear ./config/darktable
  2. Start darktable, disable OpenCL, restart darktable
  3. Import folder with 911 photos (The number is a random thing. It is not an emergency for me, since the error does not really affect me as long as it does not happen with OpenCL enabled)

→ None of these photos has astro denoise activated. Everything imports fine, all thumbnails are built, scrolling the whole folder, no crash.
→ Repeat: same result.

Now, exact same 911 photo folder with astro denoise applied to every photo: crash, everytime. I think the amount of photos I’m testing with is the reason I can reproduce at 100%. Since OP tries to import 2000 photos, I thought that would be ok.

The Issue I was able to recreate and that the fix targeted seems different than yours. If fixing the Astro Denoise via the CPU path is desired, a new issue should be started and maybe help test.

Let’s see what @lfsimsym will report about the fix. Not that it still crashes for them and they reactivate their github issue. Then we had it twice.

And as for testing, someone would have to help me past this so I could contribute.
