Edited image files not exporting...

Hi all, I encountered an unusual issue when using Darktable today: My edited images are apparently not exporting. I did everything as usual: I selected ‘target storage’ directory in the right-hand pane of light table, and hit the ‘export’ button at the bottom. I saw the momentary popup showing the name of the exported file, but nothing was exported, it seems. I tried exporting as both JPG and PNG. Result was the same for both. Can anyone help? Thank you.

Screen dump of right hand pane, please.
OS? dt version?

Is !!! a valid folder character?

Have you always used that target directory?

g-man, yes it’s a valid folder name character. I’ve been using it for years, with no issues - including with Darktable. In fact, I’ve used that very same folder for Darktable exports before, with no issues.

Claes,
No, but I have used that target directory before for Darktable exports with no issues.

@Ally-007 Thanks. It’s a l-o-n-g time since I used windows,
but three things make me worried in your target:

  • !
  • &
  • spaces without quotes

Just for testing purposes, could you please try a “normal” target, without any peculiar chars?

Have fun!

Valid & reserved MS Windows directory & filename characters…

Use any character in the current code page for a name, including Unicode characters and characters in the extended character set (128–255), except for the following:

    The following reserved characters:
        < (less than)
        > (greater than)
        : (colon)
        " (double quote)
        / (forward slash)
        \ (backslash)
        | (vertical bar or pipe)
        ? (question mark)
        * (asterisk)

Integer value zero, sometimes referred to as the ASCII NUL character.

Characters whose integer representations are in the range from 1 through 31, except for alternate data streams where these characters are allowed. For more information about file streams, see File Streams.

Any other character that the target file system does not allow.

However, although MS Windows may accept !!! and & within the directory & filenames - that doesn’t meant that darktable export file handling does…

Very stupid question perhaps: Is there still room in the target directory? Since you have used that same destination before, something must have changed other than the directory name…

rvietor,
Not that I’m aware of. I just tried exporting to another directory, on another hard drive with many GB of spare space and no special characters in the folder name. Still no export. I’m wondering if it’s something to do with the Fijifilm camera I used. However, I was editing a JPG from the camera - not a RAW file.

It seems rather obvious to just try the desktop or something simple …if it works clearly its something in that syntax that is off…if it is still an issue then something else could be pursued???

Are you asking for a 16bit PNG from the 8 bit JPG…maybe this is the issue…

EDIT…nope I just exported a jpg as a 16bit PNG and it was fine…

What camera?

Try maybe changing your scale… I think you are entering a pixel value as 1200 multiplier in the scale box… do you want scale by pixel @ 1200 … not an image 1200 times larger??

EDIT: I tried to use 1200 times just for giggles and DT crashes for me… I think this is likely your issue…

Claes,
Fujifilm Finepix SL1000 (it’s my ‘pocket’ camera, as opposed to my DSLR, however, I have edited JPGs from this camera before with no issues). It does seem to be something to do with the camera, because I just tried editing a RAW file from my Sony DSLR, and it exported the edit normally, with no issues.

Priort,
I had it set to 1200 pixels. I tried changing it to 1400 pixels, out of curiosity, but the result was the same. I’m going to try reinstalling Darktable.

your screen shot shows by scale not by pixel…have you changed that …not just the number

You want pixels not by scale…

Priort,
Well spotted, and yes, that was a mistake on my part. However, I have changed it to ‘pixels’ but the result is exactly the same: no image file found in the destination directory. I tried reinstalling Darktable but it made no difference. The problem seems to be related to the camera I used. When using my other camera (Sony A58 DSLR) it exports the edits no problem.

Are there any errors logged on the console/in the log file?
