Eliminate unwanted elements in photo

Hello,

i need some help to eliminate the wire passing in front of the mountain. I tried with retouch module with darktable 4.8.0 but without good results. Any suggestion using darktable?
Thanks!!

I’d try to process it in DT then further process the output using gimp and resynthesize plug-in (heal selection) to eliminate unwanted elements.

On a note, is there a replacement in the current gimp version ?

I got good results with retouch in darktable. The trick is to use wavelet separation. And don’t try to do it all with just one shape - do it in segments so it’s easier to pick a good source area.

Only removed some of the top wire here. If you look closely, the clouds have been fluffed a bit and such, but you’ll have to compare side-by-side to notice.

Make sure the mask opacity is 100%.

I tried using the paintbrush tool (multiple times) in the retouch module set to the healing option. I am not unhappy with the result. I only removed one power line because I am feeling lazy.

EDIT: Looks rather OK in my opinion.

I assume it was the lower of the three wires. Did you try removing all of it or only some segments? While it’s certainly less visible, I can still see most of it across the frame.

Was there not a recent thread that also claimed success by first cloning and then healing??? Maybe not??

I stated that in a previous thread but that approach would not work here. I used the healing tool and a small diameter brush with reasonable success on the image here. I only did a single line to prove it was easily possible to do.

I worked with a product, many years ago, that allowed the removal of bad data as well as artifact, such as powerlines, by averaging data over adjacent image lines.
I often wondered if that was a procedure that should have been a part of dt.
For my part, I have found that, rather tedious but effective, the careful use of dt healing (used at a large scale) can do the job. It is just a bit painful.

For such tasks GIMP (including Gmic) is simply the better tool. I’m happy, that there is a retouch tool in darktable. It’s perfect to remove smaller annoyances like sensor spots. But for proper retouch work, GIMP is so much better…

I’m sure you will find it hard to find traces of the cables, even when you zoom in to 100%:

The way how I did it is already described here: Ugh... Powerlines! - #4 by Popanz

After trying with retouch module in darktable I think I will try GIMP solution.
Retouch module can give good (not perfect) result but it is a very slow process.

I removed one of the wires using 5 thin shapes as a demo.

Sorry - can’t share the entire image but my wife was very persuasive about the picture and I simply couldn’t say no.

All in DT - few layers of retouching. Not perfect but it worked.

With a darktable retouch module using 3 path shapes:
