Thanks Tamas. I have shared this information with my past students because when I put AA lithium-ion batteries in my flash unit the heat generated was scary hot.

When it comes to speedlights, the issue with lithium ion is the cells they use are not high enough power (first of all they are tiny because they need the space for the USB and voltage converter, and they are optimized for energy not power)

Yes, I found this surprising but it actually makes sense. A lithium ion battery may be capped at 2A discharge, while a NiMH can serve 5A according to some tests for a while and even 10A (!) for a short period.

NiMH is an amazing piece of technology: reliable, cheap, robust, and safe, works well for a trickle discharge in a wall clock or a high power draw of a flash.
