A bit of AI masking to help ease the workload DT 5.6.

@Terry I’m on 5.4.1 still so I don’t try to load your xmp. But your jpeg looks like there are some halos
My result is this, but I think I prefer the bluer sky.
xmp is the same for both, just go back to history item 23 for the less-cropped version.

Darktable 5.4.1
I wanted to keep the two branches to give a sense of scale, but I didn’t manage to make it to my liking so I cropped horizontally instead to try and highlight the bird perched on a long extruded branch.
I tried to have a natural blue sky by using the preserve hue slider of the AgX module and a bit of color equalizer too.
I would have liked to crop into the bird, but I love the composition with the two broken branches, so I kept it.
Looking at the mask there is some bleed from using the feather without some contrast modulation on the mask to tighten it up…I see it in the exposure masks,
I like your ‘result’, so to say. The deep crop is on the edge of what the picture technically can resist…
You have me puzzled as to how you produced the nice frame, partially behind the bird. Looked into the xmp but did not get an answer…
Anyhow your take on this picture inspired me!
This counts somehow for me as well, at least for the thight crop, it has some graphical aspects which I definitely like. On the wider one I don’t like the vignette.
Thankyou! I should have said on your post in showcase, Vignette module ‘Shape’ setting at 0 turns it into a faux frame.
And I’m masking the background, so the branch cuts off this ‘frame.’ A happy accident there.
Nice, thanks for informing me, will play around…!
Poor creature, other continent in 20 seconds, how to handle that!
Like the play a lot!
I’ve just realised I should have switched demosaicing to 3-pass. It cleans up a little of the noise around the edges of the bird.
And I think I overdid the capture sharpening again!
Did not know, helps on my version too…
I like that crop and that calm unity. But have you zoomed in on your edit? You somehow cripled that bird. Especially the beak has some major loss.
Thanks Uli, will check!
PS And the result, still not perfect though. I have to improve my masking technique.
Cant’t help to notice you’re probably a quite precise man… ![]()
