Everybody or at least some are talking about darktable 5.5.?

Everybody or at least some are talking about darktable 5.5.? But as often as I watch out, there’s still “only” 5.4.1 available. Did I miss something? Myself working on Mac.
Thanks in advance and Kind Regards

Uwe

5.5 is the upcoming release and quite a number of members are using the dev nighly build already.
Update: The stable release is still 5.4.x (5.4.1 by 1.6.2026)

Next stable release will be 5.6, which is expected to be out in June. 5.5 is the development branch, which will become 5.6 when the maintainer decides that the time is right for the new release. Then work on the next development release (5.7) will commence, and the cycle will repeat.

Is this type of version numbering wide spread in software development?

Yes, it is very common to use even minor numbers for stable releases and odd minor numbers for development releases. Also the Linux kernel used it (until 2.4/2.5, I believe). If memory serves me well, Gimp used to do the same.

The idea is that the “devel” release comes after the previous “stable” release, upon which it is built, and before the next stable release, which is based on some stable state of the previous devel release.

It is less used now, as some find it confusing (which, one may argue, is understandable). Anyways, version numbers are purely conventional, and since there is not one gold standard, one convention is as good as the next one imho.
