Export to GIMP opens a second instance of GIMP

I’ve set GIMP as external editor. When I click the palette button to export, the processed image does not appear in my open GIMP instance, rather a second instance of GIMP is launched.

Perhaps I’ve not set the external editor correctly. This is the path I entered: ‘/Applications/GIMP.app/Contents/MacOS/gimp’ (which RT doesn’t really recognize as an executable file, but closely matched what I found in the web that others were using.)

Could it be a clue that the second instance of GIMP opens with the UI in an obsolete multi-window configuration that I tried, then went back to single window?

Hey, welcome. What version of gimp?

Oops. The new GIMP 3.0.2 and RT is 5.11

And when I said “obsolete” I didn’t mean an older version that might still be hanging around as I’ve only started and only have used ver 3.

Does it work differently if you link to gimp.app?

I can’t get RT to link to gimp.app using their change executable button as it doesn’t recognize gimp.app as executable. If I manually edit the path to just /Applications/GIMP.app then when I click the button to send it to gimp I get the error “Cannot start Editor/Please set the correct path in Preferences”.

The gimp docs say you need a switch, -n for a new instance, which to me means the default is same instance.

Isn’t there a field in rt where you can give the full command? What happens if you try that?

Thanks for hanging with me, paperdigits.

I’m not a software guy, so may be using the term “instance” wrong. What happens is, if I have GIMP running, the external editor button in RT opens the processed photo in a new GUI of GIMP, not in the already opened app editing window. A second (or third if I’m not careful) GIMP icon appears in the Dock with the little dot underneath indicating that the app is running.

If I do not have GIMP running. RT opens GIMP with the image, however, just like the case above the GUI is an old one (with panels in different locations.) I also discovered this UI is compromised, i.e., it is larger than the display (the bottom is off screen) and I cannot change the vertical size, not all the panels are rendered properly, and not all items are in the drop-down menu.

I only know of one field in RT that accepts the command for the external editor. I did try an experiment. I quit GIMP and opened it via terminal using the exact path I had entered into RT preferences. It opened GIMP with the full GUI in the correct configuration of theme and panels. So that path is correct and appears RT might be doing something ‘funny’ when it goes to invoke GIMP.

Well, this is disappointing…

I uninstalled both GIMP and RT completely; even removing all files from Library that referred to either app.

Installed both from fresh downloads. Opened both (RT crashed on first open). Again tried to set GIMP as external editor in RT and again RT did not recognize GIMP.app as an executable file, so set the command as in my first post above.

Opened GIMP and only changed the size of the fonts, icons, and widened
the side panels a bit.

From RT opened a CR2 file and did a little editing. Clicked the button to open file in external editor. RT “quit suddenly”, but the confirmation window was still there, clicked ok and RT reopened at the default size. And again RT opened a new instance/window of GIMP instead of the open instance/window. And the second window was default with none of the UI adjustments I’d made.

Tried several times with GIMP closed first. On clicking the open in external editor button got a RT quit suddenly dialog. It did open GIMP with the image, but again it was a default configuration with none of the UI adjustments I’d made before quitting.

Sigh.
