Extracting XMP from jpg...

I am a bonehead.
I discarded the history on a photo that I just posted in the Capture Challenge thread unintentionally. I have tried loading the jpg as a sidecar. There is no error, but none of the modules I used are there.

I tried using exiftool using the following
exiftool -xmp -b -X filename.jpg >filename.ARW.xmp

Which gave me an XML format file but I get “error loading file”. I tried running dt with -d all…but I cant find an error listed (I do not know what I am looking for).

I also attempted to use exiv2 -e X filename.jpg but it behaves the same as trying to load directly from the jpg.

Flailing about, I went to my export preferences and “develop history” is NOT checked. I am assuming that for my history to be baked in to the jpg, that has to be checked? Which would mean, that I need to give up and start the edit over?

Believe so.

Yes. But look at it as a chance to improve!

I prefer my clouds without gilding

Is develop history option un-checked by default? Or did I, at some point, decide to uncheck it for some unknown reason?

darktable regularly creates backups of the database. It may be possible to restore the history of the affected image using one of these backups.

It’s checked by default.

I forgot to mention that I went looking for a backup first, but because everything occurred so quickly, there was no bacckup that contained the image.

Thanks for letting me know what the default is. I really do not remember unchecking that box, but it does sound like something I might have done when I first started.
