Nice tries, but no. Those are not the proper explanations.
Instead, the sooty appearance stems from the swan’s tendency to chat up young birds, and offer them a ride. His last passenger was what’s called a sothöna (soot hen) in Swedish (Fulica atra). Evidently, she left some residue.
