Feature Request – Sony Alpha A7 V Raw (.ARW) Compatibility Support

Hi @agriggio and community,

I’m reaching out to request support for Sony Alpha A7 V raw files (.ARW format). My father recently purchased this camera, but unfortunately ART doesn’t currently recognize or open the raw files it produces.

Details:

Camera model: Sony Alpha A7 V
File format: .ARW (Sony raw)
Current issue: Files cannot be opened in ART; the application doesn't seem to detect them as compatible raw files

I’ve attached a sample raw file from this camera for testing purposes. Would it be possible to add support for Sony A7 V raw files in a future release?

Thank you for your work on this excellent raw processor. Any information about compatibility timelines would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards

In any case, please note that the new “compressed” and “compressed HQ” raw formats on this model will likely not be supported for a while. Make sure you’re shooting “lossless” only, support for that could be added.

Thank you for the quick response and clarification about the compressed formats!

I’ve reconfigured the camera to shoot lossless raw only, and ART now successfully opens the .ARW files with the embedded JPEG preview. However, I’m encountering two issues in edit mode:

Issues observed:

Tone curve behavior is severely aberrant – The curve doesn't respond as expected and produces incorrect tonal adjustments
Black borders on right and bottom edges – A dark border appears on the right side and bottom of the image, cutting off valid image data

Additional details:

Camera model: Sony Alpha A7 V
Raw format: Lossless only (as requested)
The embedded JPEG preview displays correctly
Issues only appear when entering edit mode; the thumbnail/preview is fine

I’ve attached a problematic .ARW file for debugging. Could these be metadata interpretation issues specific to the A7 V’s lossless format?

Thank you again for your support!

Best regards

I think you misunderstood @kmilos. The A7 V is not currently supported, regardless of the raw format, and it’s possible it may not be until LibRaw (the underlying raw decoding library) releases an update with that support. It depends on how different it is from the A7 IV or other recent Sony cameras.

In any case, the best place for this request is the ART GitHub repository:

You’re right, I misunderstood! Thanks for clarifying. I’ll open a feature request on the GitHub repository to track Sony A7 V support once LibRaw adds it.

Appreciate your help!
