The sky was overcast and bluish, and the bales were patently golden. However something is seriously wrong with the colors I get in the picture… I tried to fix it with color calibration, color balance rgb, etc. with poor results. I am looking forward for ideas!

Tried a more neutral white balance (tiny white spot in the fore ground) and then pushed a bit in the 4 ways of color balance rgb (highlight → blue, power → yellow).
That’s much better!
I did a quick edit and then played a bit with the sky and didn’t get anything to interesting…
Changed it up a bit with more exposure and the watermark module…
I know this (your posted edit) @Santiago-Ignacio might not have the colors you were looking for but you know i really like your version …to me it conveys a stark fall day… Its got a sort of color grade like was used on the Dunkirk movie… I think its a keeper…

My go. I shifted the WB to blue, then used color balance rgb with a hue mask to golden-ify the straw. Dodgy practices probably… 
Wow, I am glad that I joined this forum! Thank you for your kind answers and ideas! After a study of your sidecar files, I did some experimentation and came with this rather overcooked version.
