File browser and places show everything

Hi,
I’m new with RT and I use it on Linux (Ubuntu 24.04) and Macbook Air (Sonoma).

Works well for the moment, but I’m surprised to see everything in the file browser and places even system directories (/, /var, etc, even the EFI part).
Is there a way to hide unwanted directories/places, and concentrate on user directories, so the file browser could be a bit more clean and reliable ?

Thanks

The only way to hide directories is to collapse the parent directory. You can add specific directories to Places. They show up at the top of the Places section which gives you quick access to the directories you want.

I’m not on Linux anymore these days but it might be possible to create a custom group with restricted rights, just sufficient for running RawTherapee and accessing the required directories, but no more. However, getting all that tuned correctly also might end up being more trouble than it’s worth.

Hi,
Collapsing the parent directory is not a solution as / is the parent directory of everything, and is visible in the file browser and in Places too.
And yes, tuning the access rights is probably too complicated.
Thanks for the answers, I’ll try on a more Linux specific forum to see if any expert can help.

Not sure you’re going to get more expert than here. Using places is the correct way of doing it, not sure what else you’re looking for.

Places is just a shortcut to folders in the File Browser, and it shows Places I’d prefer not to see (like my EFI partition which has nothing to do here).
What I’m looking for is just having the ability to see and work with chosen folders, not the entire computer file system. Nothing more, but may be it’s not possible in this software. I think so because I have the same thing on my Macbook app.

As I wrote, the only way to hide directories from RawTherapee itself is by collapsing the parent directory, which means the feature you are looking for does not exist. However, it seems like hiding directories is not your end goal. You want quick and easy access to certain directories. That’s what Places is for. All the directories you add appear in the top section. That section contains only the directories you add. If for some reason you still want to hide the other sections in Places, try resizing Places so it is just large enough to show the top section.

That section contains only the directories you add

My RT’s “Places” lists devices i don’t think I ever added to RT, they are irrelevant in a photography context and RT does not respond when I click on them. I don’t mind them being listed, I know what they are. Maybe the OP sees something similar?

RT-places

shortening the list by dragging up the frame will hide whatever you don’t want to see, and you can leave only the favorites you defined:

Yes, Places does contain other locations and devices. That’s why I wrote about the top section of Places and resizing Places as shown in @marter’s screenshot.
