Film Simulation is not working [solution found]

Hi friends,
yesterday PCLinuxOS updated Rawtherapee to the 5.5 verion.
Congratulations, I see a lot of improvements, more fast and more features.
However the Film simulation module is not working, nothing happens. I deleted the RT cache without success. The folder for the Haldcluts is the correct.

Any advice?

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Works fine here (Win 10)
Did you activate the tool with the power button?

Hi @Aleph,

To be on the safe side:

Check Preferences | Image Processing | HaldCLUT directory.

Re-select the directory and re-start RawTherapee.

Have fun!

Where do I get a film simulation pack that includes Fuji XTrans simulations?

Hi friends,
I did everything without success :frowning:

I don’t know where I’ve found it but here it is: Fuji XTrans II - Astia v3.zip (1,4 MB)

Can you give us more details, please.
Do you have any entries in the list or not?
What have you done?
…

I can select all the presets. The button is activated but nothing changes in the image. I Re-selected the directory and re-started RawTherapee. I moved the HaldCluts presets to a new folder an re-selected it. Nothing change happens when I select the film simulation presets , I move the slider, nothing happens. No success.
Before the update they were working fine.

I’ve no idea why it doesn’t work.

@Aleph show a video recording of what you’re doing

Thank you! Merry Christmas to me. I’ve also since done a little search of some recommended Haldclut files and have included them in my installation.

Thank you @Aleph
That’s quite bizarre, never seen that before.

Please try closing RT, moving out or renaming your options file, then run RT, configure the Hald CLUTs folder in Preferences, restart RT if needed, and see if that helps. If it did help then please upload the options file which you renamed or moved out.

Hi Morgan, today I tried this. Hi renamed the .config/Rawtherapee folder. When I opened RT I configured the HaldCLUTS again. Not succes :frowning:

Please upload a raw file and a clut to filebin.net and post the link here to reproduce

@Aleph we also noticed that:

  • your paths use non-ascii characters.
  • your filenames begin with an underscore.
  • you’re using a mount point called “windows” which I’m assuming is NTFS.
  • your HaldCLUT folder lies with another HaldCLUT folder: ~/.config/RawTherapee/HaldCLUT/HaldCLUT

Those things shouldn’t be a problem but who knows, so let’s try something. Please restart RT and test if it works after every step.

  1. Create a folder ~/haldcluts , then download this Agfa_APX_25.png https://filebin.net/t8sy6kf4la4w7y9p and place it in ~/haldcluts, then set the HaldCLUTs folder in Preferences to ~/haldcluts, restart and test.
  2. Create a folder ~/photos if you don’t have one already, then download amsterdam.pef http://rawtherapee.com/shared/test_images/amsterdam.pef and place it into ~/photos, test.
  3. Copy the full path of image _MG_8905.CR2, i.e. /media/windows/Mis imagenes/....../_MG_8905.CR2 including all special characters, and paste it here in the forum. You can copy it from the textbox here:
  4. Copy _MG_8905.CR2 into ~/photos and test. Also upload it for us please.

I did Morgan. No success. :frowning:

This is the path of _MG_8905.CR2:
/media/windows/Mis imágenes/CANON 5D/Canon 5D 2018/2018-12-08 Sevilla - Sanlúcar Belén

Good afternoon, @Aleph and @Morgan_Hardwood,

I have some spare time(!) this afternoon, and since I suffer from a slight spell of Distro Fever I decided to download a copy of PCLinuxOS. I installed it onto a free partition, and fetched the RawTherapee version (5.5) that PCLinuxOS offers, downloaded a HaldCLUT.zip, and unpacked it.

I placed a .RAF file (named slask.raf) and the HaldCLUT folder in ~/
started RawTherapee, and set the HaldCLUT in Preferences to ~/HaldCLUT
Restarted RawTherapee.

In rt’s File Browser, I selected slask.raf, set processing profile ops to Clear,
and opened the image. Color Tab → FIlm simulation ON → Black-and-White → Agfa → APX 25.

But the image is still RGB. Film Simulation seems not to work.

My immediate plan for additional steps is to fetch a more modern RawTherapee to see how that behaves with this OS…

I’ll be back.

Have fun!

Now, a little later…
I have it working on PCLinuxOS.

Here is what I did:
I fetched RawTherapee-release-5.5-5.5-20181217.AppImage
from Releases · Beep6581/RawTherapee · GitHub
made it executable and started it.

No problems at all. Using the same steps as above, the film simulations
now work the way they should.

Have fun!

Hi @Claes,

great!!

Yes, this RawTherapee-release-5.5-5.5-20181217.AppImage version is working.

What a pity. The RT 5.5 stable version in our PCLinuxOS repositories have this Film Simulation problem. :frowning:
