Is there a way to search the metadata for specific information? For example, for a specific lens? No matter what I search in collection filters , I always get an empty set as a result.

You might have run into a shortcoming (bug?).
Lenses are indeed not picked up when using that search field, be it in the 4.5 dev version you are using or the latest stable 4.4.2 version (did not test earlier versions).
You can use a camera type/brand in that field, I mention this because both camera and lens are not present in the new rule pull down menu.
As a work-around you can use the collections section instead of the collection filters section to search for lenses (be it as part of a larger search), it can be found in the pull-down section.
I would advise you to file a report on GitHub for the, what looks to be, missing search possibility for lenses in the collection filters section.
