I am interested in the sunseeker app:
but I am hesitant to spend 10€ on an app that I will use 3 times a year maximum. besides, there might be an FOSS alternative. Does anyone have recommendations for a sun tracker app?

I often use a website called suncalc, mostly to look at a location on a map and see the suns direction at different times of say, I don’t know if that’s your use case
Hmm. What I would like to have is the overlay between camera video and the sun trail across the image to visualize how the image will look like when the sun sets etc.
something like?
also really good but not opensource
I mostly rely on guesswork, looking at the suns direction and the subject of my photo, like “I want to photograph this corner, if I go at 18:00 it will be lit from the right”
As of last November, I was unable to find any augmented reality celestial tracking apps that were free as in speech OR free as in beer.
Stellarium meets my needs. I use the Lite version, but the full version even interfaces with GPS and can control telescopes. https://stellarium.org
I purchased the PhotoPills app. It is amazing but I am falling short of making full use of it. Hopefully, in the future I will be able to utilize it more properly. The invested 12 € are well spend - I think.
The PhotoPills web site and their YouTube channel have a ton of instructional material.
You might also want to check out Photo Ephemeris. Many of my favorite shots have been planned using this tool (on my computer rather than my phone).
