Fuji X-Pro2 and X-T2 compressed raw support in DT and/or RT?

What is the status re DT/RT handling of X-Pro2 compressed raw files?

X-T2 added in title, since the compression method also is used in the new X-T2.

Anyone knows anything?

I opened a bug back when the xpro2 came out and I briefly had one for testing:

https://redmine.darktable.org/issues/10934

I also contacted Fuji directly and was basically given the run around, but I guess it was reverse engineered without Fuji’s help: http://www.libraw.org/news/libraw-compressed-fujifilm-raf-support Not sure where that leaves darktable support though. Might just need someone to step in a do the actual work of adding that code (it’s GPL2, so should be fine I would think).

Hi luxagraf,
Thank you for the information. Sigh. Someone at redmine classified this with Priority:Low

That was @luxagraf himself.

Oh dear, how unwise
But now, since both X-Pro2 and X-T2 have the compress facility,
perhaps it would be a good reason to bump up the classification?

Let me tell you a secret: no one cares about or even looks at that flag.

Well, even if that flag does get ignored, it’s usually not a good idea to jump into an open source project and expect your pet bugs to get fixed right away. You and I think its high priority, but I suspect no one else does. The fact that there’s Xtrans support at all in Darktable is, as I understand it, the result of a single person’s efforts. I have to say I was disappointed to see Fuji hasn’t released a spec or anything. They’ve obviously given the info to Adobe and others.

Unfortunately my Fuji was just a loaner so I can’t help out anymore. Unless I get the XT2 as a loaner

Hi!
I am new to this forum. I just wanted to let you know that RawTherapee cannot handle the X-T2’s RAF files.
I am very displeased with this. I am a DSLR shooter and when getting the X-T1 already ran into huge problems with their RAF-files. This was rectified by an update of Adobe’s creative suite but with the introduction of the X-T2 we are back at square 1. My take on this (currently still under discussion with an Adobe Camera Raw technician and a Fuji Sales person): Yes, the sensor technology has been adopted from the X-Pro2. It is not groundbreaking technology and Adobe should be able to handle it just fine. And they do. As long as you are willing to pay up. Only Adobe’s CC products (at 10 USD per month - for now) can handle the X-T2’s output.

I have been looking for alternative software and ran into this forum. Have only just downloaded but kudos to those who work on it. This could finally be a good alternative for us photographers who are currently being ripped off by Adobe. At least, this is how I feel. I am a professional who invested in their Creative Suite on my own wallet (thousands and thousands of dollar’s worth) and now I need to sign up and pay up to 120 dollar per year (for now)…

I am in communication with them right now because I feel that the X-T2 is an update of an existing camera model. There seems to be no reason that Adobe cannot include the CS6 suite in their fix. Fuji people are gullible and as I have read on this forum make you do the runaround. So… here lies an opportunity for this RawTherapee software to pick up the slack!

RawTherapee crashes on the new files. For your info: the Xt1 produces a file named _DSF1111. The Xt2 produces a file named DSCF1111. No idea what that means. It has no underscore at the beginning of the name.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to be able to skip the “Convert to DNG” step that is currently the only solution they have to offer for Desktop purchased Adobe software right now. If there were an alternative machine for me to handle images that need post processing because the JPG does not cut it, I am game.

I will keep an eye on this subject. By the way: not meaning to badmouth Fuji or Adobe - like I said, I am in direct communication with them about this.

If anybody needs to more about the Xt2 let me know. The images it produces are stellar and it really does not deserve to be dropped this easily by Adobe. But if the big giant wants to treat their clientele like this, good-bye to them. And I will gladly step over to your product. If it does not crash.

From a technical standpoint I am getting really intrigued in what it is this new submodel has that makes it so hard to digest?

thanks.
Nicky

Hi @Licorice & welcome,

It simply indicates that you have set the X-T1 for Adobe RGB (_DSF) while the X-T2 is set to sRGB (DSCF).

I have just started playing with libRaw (which is able to handle X-Pro2/X-T2 compressed files). However, my brain is not sufficiently large to be able to incorporate that code into RT or DT.

I have timed some of the new commands that libRaw gives us (source = a compressed X-Pro2 file, size 24.8 Megs):

  • simple_dcraw 33.9 seconds (that’s slow!).
Will generate a .ppm file, size 73.0 Megs.

  • 4channels 3.1 seconds (good!).
Creates four .tiff files, one for each color channel (R, G, B, G2), each having a size of 12.2 Megs.

Now, while we wait for larger-brains-than-mine to tackle RT/DT incorporation, what can we do? Would be interesting to “compose” the four channel .tiffs into a single file that could be processed in RT/DT/The Gimp.

Is this something for G’mic? Or ImageMagick? Or…?

Hi @Licorice, welcome!

I certainly understand your frustrations with adobe, as I still am forced to use Creative Cloud at work. The good news is, I think Free Software has a very good set of tools. We don’t have feature parity with Adobe stuff (nor are we trying to have that) and you’ll certainly need to play with the tools and learn things, but most of the tools are there to produce a very nice image.

The best thing about these tools is that you can personally help improve them. If the Fuji stuff, or anything else, isn’t working, you can talk directly to a developer to help improve things. That is something you’ll never be able to do with adobe.

It took a while but there is an RT branch with compressed xtrans support since today
