Full Spectrum Images

I’m thinking of converting my old Sony a7 so it has full spectrum capability. I’m new with Darktable and full spectrum images so wonder if there are settings or modules I should pay attention to.
Are there any Darktable tutorials that cover this?

I’ve certainly processed IR pics on Darktable. I think there’s even some relevant channel swapping presets in colour calibration (?). Also quite a bit on YouTube

And so on

Many thanks. I looked around on YouTube but obviously not hard enough.

I’ve already been down that rabbit hole

Hmmm, does that mean it’s not worth pursuing?

I see a lot on infrared but nothing on full spectrum but I guess full spectrum relies on lens filtering to get the desired effect.

If you look at the notes under those videos, you should be able to find his website. That covers full-spectrum as well.

Full spectrum allows you to use different front of lens filters or sets of filters for different effects. I don’t think there’s much reason to shoot a full spectrum camera without any front of lens filters as the visible light will predominate. Having a camera modified with one of those filters over the sensor means you’re somewhat stuck with that particular filter but on the other hand you don’t need to faff with front of lens filters.

I wouldn’t get any camera converted that you want to still use for visible light

FWIW:

720nm conversion

Interesting. Thanks!

I have a Sony a7 that’s been sitting around for several years so for a couple hundred quid it would be worth it. Full spectrum seems to allow many more options. Right now I’m interested in the intense B&W images from infrared.

I originally had a 580nm-converted Canon EOS M with the hope that I could do false colour with the 580nm and then optionally put a 720nm filter in front of it for B&W. In the end the 720 filter was basically always fitted to the lens and I kept having to swap the filter around every time I changed lens. When I moved to FujiFilm I just got a 720nm conversion and couldn’t be happier with it.

I look like a proper geek pro with my two camera bodies round my neck.

You can get a feel for b&w infrared by getting a IR720 filter that will block visible light on your unmodified camera. Your exposures will have to be long as only a little infrared light is getting passed your IR cut filter built into the camera so the shots need to be on a tripod but it does work. Then maybe you don’t have any regrets after you do the conversion.

I’ve a modified Nikon D3400, 560nm. I’ve a 850nm filter screwed on and I’ve never taken it off. Love the b/w images

I thought I’d convert to full spectrum and I’d have more options. Plus I wouldn’t need the long exposures.

Interesting video. Thanks.

I think I’ll just go ahead and convert my old a7 to full spectrum. It’s not too expensive for a camera that isn’t used at all.

I thought I’d go with a full spectrum conversion thinking it would give me more options.
