Getting to grips with the Gimp appimage

Super stoked with the GIMP appimage released by @Carmelo_DrRaw.

The more I play with it, the more I’m impressed. Never before have I given Gimp so much of my time, it really is quite powerful with it’s capabilities. Then add both Photoflow and G’mic into the mix… Very cool!

The following are a couple of images I’ve put the appimage through. Both use PhotoFlow and G’mic plugins. They may not be perfect, but I reckon that’s more to do with learning what-does-what.

Well done @Carmelo_DrRaw, keep up the awesome work!

Thanks @Fotonut, that’s really encouraging!

As for how to practically achieve certain result, feel free to describe what you would like to achieve (with sample images) and me or others will certainly give you good advices on the “how” part…

@Fotonut: have you already given photoflow’s “local contrast” filter a try? It is under the “details” tab.

A good starting point could be

  • method = Bilateral
  • iterations = 1
  • spatial variance = 20
  • value variance = 15
  • equalizer = enabled

The filter enhances the local contrast, optionally limited to the mid-tones if the equaliser is enabled.
With the equaliser you can still tweak how much the dark and bright areas are suppressed:
