Gimp - Need help with free select tool on a 2 layer image

Hi,

I am working with an image that is comprised of two layers.

The top image sits on top of the bottom image, within Gimp. Which is what I want. Both layers have the “eyeball” visible.

When I attempt to cut away part of the top image using the “free select tool”, and I export it, I see part of the outline of the area I had just cut away on the exported image.

What is going on?

I am using Gimp 2.10 on a iMac running Catalina.

Thanks!
Dan

I also had problems with exporting from layers before. Now I always make a new layer from visible before exporting which circumvents the problem.

I’m not sure exactly what is going on - exporting to JPEG or PNG should result in roughly what you see on screen, allowing for colour management. By, see part of the outline, do you mean there are artifacts around the edges? If so, you might need to feather the selection before doing the cut. Also check the opacity of your layers in the Layers dialogue. Confusingly, the opacity slider is above the place where you select the layer, but it only applies to the layer you select.
