Gimp versions... I'm a bit confused.

Hi all,

My Linux package manager lists and downloads 2 versions of GIMP, 3.0.4 and 3.1.2, both flatpaks. However, only one is listed in my app menu (3.0.4). Both have been downloaded, apparently.

I’m curious. Is 3.1.2 a beta or stable release right now? And, if 3.1.2, why is it not taking precedence over 3.0.4? How do I get access to v3.1.2 when it appears there is no path to it?

Cheers.

Which linux and “package manager” - flatpak (edit: not paying attention it is a flatpak)

Gimp 3.0.4 is the current “stable” version, which is unlikely to get any updates until the next stable 3.2 comes along to replace it.

Gimp 3.1.nnn is the development version leading up to Gimp 3.2 It is updated on a almost hour-by-hour basis. I do not know if the flatpak updates that frequently, for example I use a Gimp 3.1.2 appimage, which updates maybe every few days, a big download to constantly update. You only really need Gimp 3.1.nn if you want to check out new features or are interested in “bug” reporting.

If using a flatpak there are installation details here: GIMP - Development Downloads

Thanks for your reply. Much appreciated.

I now have the option, with your help I’ve just worked it out.

Gimp team directly asked packagers not to ship 3.1.x in the distro.
