G'MIC 1.6.6.1 plugin for GIMP unable to update filters (?)

Hi David! I have GIMP 2.8.14 (64-bit) on Windows 7.

When I installed the GMIC 1.6.6.1 64-bit plugin, I no longer had my “Fave’s” filters that I had used in 1.6.5.2., so I had to recreate my Fave’s list from scratch.

And it also appears that 1.6.6.1 is not updating its filters when I click the Refresh button, in spite of the Internet checkbox being checked. When I clicked the Refresh button In the earlier versions of GMIC, the status bar would show that an update was taking place as well as its progress. But when I try to refresh the filters in 1.6.6.1, the status bar flashes for a split second then disappears. The number of Filters remains stuck at 438, and it won’t download your newest filters, such as your new Freaky Black and White filter.

It’s likely that I overlooked or misunderstood something when I installed your latest 1.6.6.x-series plugin. Is there something I can do to get the Refresh function to work?

Thanks for your help, David!

Partially my fault, I’ve just changed the G’MIC resources folder location, that is now in APPDATA/gmic/
Just copy/paste your old faves files in it (probably in %APPDATA/gmicrc/gimp_faves) and your faves should be restored.

That’s a bit more annoying. I haven’t changed anything in the way the updates works, so if this worked before, it should keep working.

Thank you, David.

I think my Refresh problem is localized to just my computer. As a test, I uninstalled 1.6.6.1 and re-installed 1.6.5.2, and found that the Refresh issue still existed, even though 1.6.5.2 never had that issue before. So I believe that something I did (or didn’t do) left me with a corrupted or missing file somewhere.

Thank you very much, sir!

Hello, David! I’m now going to ask you for some “special” support to help solve the “refresh filters” problem that I introduced earlier in this topic.

I’ve upgraded to the current G’MIC gimp plugin version 1.6.7, but the problem still exists; my G’MIC plugin won’t download and update the available filters, even though the “Internet” checkbox is checked.

Oddly, however, it DOES appear to update the filter LIST in the “Search Filters” panel, showing the newest available filters.

So the mystery is: Why does my G’MIC plugin update the Filter List, but not the filters themselves?
Are there certain files I should delete and re-install? Or is there a way to force the plugin to Refresh via a command line prompt! I’m willing to try any and all suggestions.

(By the way, it occurred to me that I’ve been using the G’MIC plugin for a long time, and that numerous filters in it are valuable in being able to do things that are not available in other software filters. So I’m very happy to say that I’ve made a long-overdue donation to your project in gratitude for the outstanding work that you and your other filter contributors keep putting into the plugin!)

Hello David.
Thanks again for your kind attention.

If the ‘Filter search’ filter succeeds in reaching the list of new filters, and at the same time the plug-in binary does not succeed in getting the update file (which are both on the same server!), then I suspect you have maybe an antivirus or firewall settings that blocks the plug-in binary. That’s very strange indeed.

The good news is that you should be able to do the update "manually’, by copying the update file : http://gmic.eu/gimp_update167.gmic directly into your folder %APPDATA%/gmic/
(for me, it’s C:\Users\david\AppData\Roaming\gmic\).

If you already have such a file in this folder, then it means the filter update is working as expected actually.

Hello, David!

A disappointing update for you: I downloaded the “gimp_update167.gmic” file and placed it in the “gmic” folder at “C:\Users\DB Kettrey\AppData\Roaming\gmic”, but it did not help.

Strangely, that file did not exist in the gmic folder prior to me putting it in there. There are a TON of other files in the gmic folder, though:

  • all the G’MIC Film Emulation presets,
  • numerous past G’MIC update files,
  • all the G’MIC update files - named by author - which appear in the “Testing” category of the plugin,
  • the “gimp_faves”, “gimp_filters”, and “compatibility.gmic” folders,
  • and a suspicious-looking “gimp_update.lock” file which is placed in the folder by the G’MIC plugin. (But I’m certain that this file is a required file).

I’m beginning to think that I should try this: Uninstall G’MIC AND GIMP, run a registry/computer-cleaning utility, and then re-install both, but I will wait for your thoughts on this, first.

Thank you, David
