G'MIC plugin for Gimp 3.2 in MacOS

If you have macOS on a recent computer with an Apple Silicon chip, you probably know that there’s currently no binary for the G’MIC plugin for GIMP. Or at least I haven’t found any.

Today I decided to put an AI agent -Claude for instance- to the test by trying to compile the plugin on my Mac mini M1, so that it would work with the latest version of GIMP (3.2.4).

It was extremely tedious. It required a lot of debugging, going back and forth between the command line and Claude’s prompt, but in the end it was a success!

I even asked Claude to synthesize of all the steps in a document because it was a mess at the end. Here’s the document; I saved it as a .txt file, but it’s formatted in Markdown, so you can rename it to .md if you have a Markdown interpreter. I cannot guarantee that this will work for you as it may depend on the versions of the different libraries and dependencies installed on your system. Hope this helps!

That’s interesting thank you !
I’ll link this post from the G’MIC download page.

Last week, I had the chance to try installing GIMP and the G’MIC-Qt plugin on a Mac using MacPorts, and I was delighted at how easy it was. The only downside is that it’s version 2.10 of GIMP (so not GIMP 3). But that was not a big deal for the targeted user (my father).

It was up and running quickly, and without having to compile anything, just three commands to type into the terminal. And the packages are updated very frequently (they already have version 3.7.6 available).

I do have a Mac with M4 silicon and am pleased you’ve persevered to get this up and running.

Hi, I’d like to do this via MacPorts too. I’m not very experienced, but I’ve tried several times without success. My Mac is a Monterey Mac, and I use Gimp 3. Any advice? Thank you
