Grasping for the canopy

This is one of about half a dozen old oaks in “The Grove”, located in the old WWII-era remains of Camp Livingston near Pineville, Louisiana. The grove is surrounded by pines and ever encroaching undergrowth. The photographic angles are limited, but I like the look of the trees. This one has the most opportunities:

There’s also a lot of really strange, ugly flora in the area (as in all areas of Louisiana):

But anyway, here’s my take on the image, done in ART 1.21.3. The challenge I found was getting the trunk and limbs to come off the background without either over-doing them nor over-subduing the background. I wanted the morning sunlight to come through but not overpower. I think I got close but not quite perfect.

Beautiful photo. You were there, so I probably made mine too bright. Anyway…

Not really. By the time I was done with all the processing (including local contrast, vignette, etc.) mine was a bit darker than reality.
