Gravestone, Logierait cemetery

I have posted some pictures from Logierait cemetery. The one thing I am not fully satisfied with is the inscription on the gravestones.

The aim was to isolate the gravestone against the background, and then to manipulate the gravestone section of the image to make the inscription more legible:

Maybe this is a little better. I used a pretty heavy local contrast. By zooming in, you can read the inscription parts that aren’t completely worn away.

I’m a bit clueless on this one

Likely somebody that is good with the retouch module could maybe clean up some of the stone in a nice way that also helps to reveal the text better…

With little success I tried localized adjustments to the gravestone. _CTW4181.NEF.xmp (23.2 KB)

A first attempt to make the inscription readable. In GIMP I added a thresholded layer in overlay mode.
Several more tries needed!

Thank you for the play.

Edit with ART, GIMP and G’MIC and maybe more relevant: ImageJ with Colour Devolution2.

Funnily, it seems like lowering the contrast (especially the local one) makes it easier to read - at least for me.

I fear this has not much of a photo anymore. Just for demonstration:

It’s fun to do a little forensic research with a photo every now and then. :ghost:

Used all kinds of convoluted madness and G’MIC presets (including morphological tricks) to get to this point (i.e, don’t ask) and still not happy. Just having fun.
