Sidecars are next to the raw file. (But you already found yours, or did I misunderstand your question?)
High-quality export downscales at the end, rather than as soon as possible. The darkroom, unless you have the now high quality preview feature turned on, downsizes as soon as possible, for sake of efficiency.
Always
I did find mine, it was located next to the RAW in its original download destination.
I thought it would export alongside the edited JPEG after processing.
These files are stored alongside the original Raw files
(darktable 4.9 user manual - sidecar files)
But let’s not sidetrack the PlayRaw. If you have questions regarding darktable’s sidecars, which are not described in the manual or elsewhere on this site, please open a new topic under Software | darktable.
Honestly, this would make a great music album cover
Pushed to the extreme

Uli - your edits are always a pleasure
They pop!
hmmmm, in this special case it must have something to do with the masking method I chose.
I played a little bit arround with the masking, because I was not too happy with the B/W version. I switched to a drawn mask and the differences on the exports are now very small - just like expected.

with HQE:
Besides the masking everything is the same:
