HEIF - new image container from the MPEG folks

Looks interesting, will it have any use?

From the link above:
“HEIF standard compliant files can utilize High Efficiency Image Coding (HEVC or H.265) encoded media. HEVC doubles the data compression ratio when compared to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC while keeping the same image quality”

That sounds like a big benefit for streaming applications.

It is going to take a long time for something like this to proliferate into the mainstream. HEVC and related technology need hardware acceleration to be practical. It will take some time for manufacturers to implement this and consumers to buy into it.

I see mobile devices and cloud services championing this change. Just today Apple announced that it will be using HEVC and HEIF on its phones. As an aside, there is an interesting article on the MP3. Like the MP3, JPG is here to stay longer than we would expect.
