Help with Masking in Natron - How to Reveal Video Behind an Image

Hello everyone,

I’m new to using Natron and visual effects software in general. I’m trying to figure out how to use masks correctly, but I’m a bit stuck. I have an image of Zatanna and a video of a woman walking past it. My goal is to gradually mask out parts of the Zatanna image as the woman walks by, so it looks like she’s passing in front of the image. However, I haven’t been able to achieve this effect.

I’ve watched several YouTube tutorials, but most of them seem to explain the opposite scenario—how to mask a person to have an image on top of them, rather than the other way around.

Could someone please guide me on how to do this, or point me to a resource that explains it in a way I can understand? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much for your patience.

Hello Ernesto

it looks like you need to ROTO the woman ( short for “Rotoscoping” ) so you can isolate and place it in front of the dancer . You can do this in Natron ( insert a Roto node after your Read2 node ) .
This ROTO node ( with the image of the woman alone ) will be merged with anything else you want to be “covered” , like the picture of the dancer in your composition.

I can see the woman has lots of Curly Hair , so this will be a LOT OF WORK
to do in ROTO ( maybe hours )

You will need to look into this ROTOSCOPING technique alone , to get used on how to do roto in general , and specially in Hair if you want your results to be believable .
