Highlights in the fog

Thanks, @Popanz ! I also sometimes feel a bit alone

Same with me

So here is my turn with RT. I mainly used the tone curve and haze removal to make it look darker. WB method “RGB grey” often shows pleasing results to my eyes

You immediately nailed one of my problems I often have to cope with on RT: I struggle to get the colours the way I want. I’ll give this WB method a try in future.

What i like more on RT is the handling of burned out areas. While the handling in the past was in dt awful, it is now quite good and you have plenty of options. But for me it is still easier to get pleasant results on RT, because it somehow has smoother gradients in the burned out highlights, without fiddling around. I usually can get the same output with dt, but it is more work to get there.

And I like what you and some other DT users can do with clouds. It is always a hard struggle for me to even come close to that

Posted the pp3 above. However, the more I think about it, the more I actually think that a separate, less playful and more ambitious processing category would be very useful.

Thanx for sharing you pp3!!!

Maybe you can tell a little bit more precise, what you mean with:

I’m already doing my best when participating in a Play Raw, even so I’m sometimes failing.
So what do you mean with less playful and more ambitious?

Ah, my name was mentioned above, thank you. From my side, even using RT only, i don’t feel alone here. The community is great and i feel very welcome and comfortable with you. For me, adding a sidecar is obligatory, not an additional effort. Its there, so why not share it?
With this workflow, i also dont see a necessarity for another “serious” category. Means: The “play” i dont undertand as “kidding only”. So, if your edit is serious based, it also is very well placed here.

@Ogven , @Popanz Both of you use tools that I rarely use. For me, HSV equalizer is something for emergencies … probably I should see it as a creative tool. And sometimes I remember that there is something called Retinex in the atomic settings and use it, but only occasionally. This one also can help

Hey here is my version. I like night photos with bright lights and fog.
Thank you @Guillermo for sharing the photo!

Preliminary edit with darktable for demosaicing, cropping, wb, denoising, highlight reconstruction with inpaint opposed. DSC_0359.NEF.xmp (8.6 KB)
Then I applied a custom film sim, making some slow and painful progress on it.

I originally started using the HSV equalizer to de-yellow skin areas where required after WB (usually the case for me under indoor lighting) and to battle pesky color casts. Then I gradually got a bit more into using it creatively, highlighting color tones and slightly shifting colors. It’s a great tool, although I absolutely can’t say that I’ve mastered it.

Lately I’ve also started using the Color Toning tool. My usual order of applying color corrections is now WB > CT > HSV, but I usually end up readjusting all three somewhere down the line as the image takes shape.

Edit: With Retinex, I’d advise general caution (similar as with Highlight compression in the Exposure settings). It can be very useful, but in my experience the standard setting of 20 is far too strong for most situations. Maybe intentionally so, to highlight the tool’s effects, but so far I’ve never ended up setting Retinex strength higher than 3. It’s one of those tools that I reluctantly try out when all else fails.

Edit 2: Love your denoising btw. That’s one tool I haven’t fallen in love with yet, I always leave it at base settings.

I decided to give Retinex and CAM16 a try. I completely agree that Retinex wants a very low setting, at least in this case (I used 4). CAM16 was interesting in that it seemed to help bring out some colors that I think are really there. I found that setting the illumination to D41 seemed to work best for me. For highlight recovery, the Luminance mode minimized color problems with the blown out lights although I couldn’t get rid of the last traces of the colored outline. Demosaicing with RCD+bilinear also helped with avoiding pink in the highlights. By the way, I am one of those lurkers who hardly ever posts anything but uses RawTherapee as my primary tool and follows what goes on here closely.
