A question for the various software developers here. I know nothing about coding and am in awe of the amazing work you do with darktable, GIMP, RT, G’Mic et al. I get excited when a new release comes out (prob a bit sad to admit ). I just wanted to know how you decide on new things to implement and how you decide on the direction of the software. Do you have feedback sessions, group discussions, input from somewhere? Are you competitive or work in collaberation? Where do you get your ideas??
Thanks
For me, this example kinda says it all…
Recently, I shot pictures at my nephew’s wedding rehearsal dinner. I used the built-in flash on my D7000 and, true to form, my niece expressed some of the biggest redyes I’ve encountered. Well, had to correct that, went looking at the existing (free) tools, and came back wanting none were both straightforward to use and produced good results So, I wrote my own.
The old “necessity is the mother of invention” saw…
In Filmulator, I implement things in descending priority:
- I need them myself.
- Other people request them (usually limited to minor features, otherwise they go on the back burner).
- I come up with a good way to do them, even if I don’t need them.
- It’s a standard feature that I think people will need.
Well, if I can’t come up with a good way to do them, it goes on the back burner even if I need it myself.
So there’s no roadmap at all.
