How to create small enough raw file for use in play_raw?

My attempts to upload the raw files I would like others to edit in play_raw fail, because, I assume, they are too big (at 25MB or so). It’s an embarrassing question, but how do I produce raw files at 10% of this size? Cropping a duplicate actually increases the size of the (very small) .xmp file but doesn’t touch the .nef file. What’s the solution?

Raw files aren’t meant to be made smaller but to be left intact. So that is not the issue.

Unfortunately I do not know what may cause them not to upload. Hope others will chime in.

That’s right – you’re adding a step (crop) to the edit instruction set, so the XMP grows in size. The NEF file will never be modified in Darktable.

You should be able to upload a RAW file and it’s definitely not the file size preventing it, as there are much much larger files uploaded to the forum. There’s gonna be something else, perhaps try re-logging?

People are experiencing upload issues on and off. Me included. Vigorous restarting of browser and maybe PC helped when I had this issue.

I think the filesize limit is 100mb, so that’s definitely not the issue.

I gave up the attempt after many tries with a restarted FireFox and a rebooted PC. Upload of about 50 MB completed immediately on the first attempt after I switched to the Brave browser.

Hetzner, out host, sometimes has routing issues and Firefox is probably using its own DNS.

Just checking my download folder from this forum and I have downloaded a 184 MB file from this forum in the past. Many of the Fujifilm cameras have very large RAW files. It is what we expect with RAW. Good luck sorting your issue.
