How to do a round crop?

RT 5.8 appimage on Manjaro.

I need to make a circle crop to an image that will become an avatar.

How can I do that?

Thanks

GIMP/Photoshop…?

  1. I’m on Linux, I do not have ps
  2. I’m no expert in gimp, but I googled and have only found that it’s possible with gimp when using the autocrop, which is not available in my version (2.10.22).

What I’ve been able to do is create a square with an inner circle that has the photo but it’s still a square png with transparent corners.

Is there anything better I could do?

Thanks

All boards offering the opportunity to upload an avatar will cut the uploaded image circular if they want to have a circular image and I always get the chance to move the circle upon my image or better to move the image below the circle. I never ever have been required to cut my image on my own. For instance you can see this here on this board.

I’ve no clue about GIMP but you must be able to either make a circular mask or selection of the section of image you want.
But as Karlheinz said, usually there is no need when creating an avatar.

That’s what I tried first. The problem is that it doesn’t do a good job. The face was not in the right spot. That what I was hoping to do it myself.

Thanks

----The face was not in the right spot.

If the face is not in the right place, you can always extend your image by adding white space to make the face in the right place and then use the circular crop of the site you want to upload your avatar to.

Huh? It has always been there. Nowadays it’s grouped:

Long press on rectangle selection. When sizing the ellipsis, press shift.

I did get that far. What I can’t find is how to crop to the inner circle. I’d like to get a round jpeg.

Thanks

I might be wrong, but afaik there is nothing like a round jpeg…

As @heckflosse says, images are always rectangle, I’ve never seen an image other than rectangular.

@foto in general those sites asking for an avatar should let you reframe/reposition your image.

If a PNG is okay, you can add an alpha channel (Layer → Transparency → Add Alpha Channel), then Image → Crop to Selection, Select → Invert, Edit → Clear.

But it only looks circular … it is still rectangle and any board which allows uploading an avatar will still try to crop it …

JPEGs are always rectangular. All image formats are rectangular, as far as I know.

When people talk about a “round image”, they really mean a rectangular image that has opaque pixels in a circle, and transparent pixels outside that circle.

Second point: JPEGs can’t record transparency.

If it is the profile picture, just factor in how the forum or site handles the image. E.g. for discourse, I found out exactly how large the image is supposed to be and where the circle overlays it.
