Here is my version, went also for the vertical crop…

GIMP. Removed the sensor spot (Healing Brush) and the twigs (Heal Selection). Luminosity masks to make local adjustments.

Since it looked rather early, I kept the image quite dark, and tried to make it a bit colder.

Also, a square-cropped version. I’m sorry about losing the mountains on the right, but the lake just felt empty there.

I was unhappy about the colours. Another attempt.

Did a little extra experimenting with masking in this one. Exposure on the land and sky. Color of the water at the bottom.

Just got DT 4.6 update for my ubuntu so giving it a spin.
I think it looks quite similar to @123sg 's version. Also like him I reused @TonyBarrett 's retouch module, with a minor addition of the twigs.
F/8 would’ve made the sensor dust spots less obvious.

Thanks for the suggestion

Still not happy, but I’ll leave it at that:

I found it surprisingly tricky

Just call Retouch!

This interpretation looks credible without being boring, still not overdone. I really like the contrast between the snowy landing and the water. Great caption btw.

Thanks a lot!

Thought I would see if I had learned anything at all about color manipulation from Boris’s @s7habo videos, so here is what I came up with.

Interested in your opinions: which crop do you prefer?

Original: A

B

C

Or do you have another recommendation?

Personally I like the widest crop as I think it makes it more about the environment. Have plenty of other versions of this shot, including tighter, wider and portrait but I just haven’t had time to go through any more photos from this trip for a while

Out of these I like A, but I just scrolled up to review the vertical crop I used and that’s still my favourite.

I like your vertical a lot too, Dave. Tony’s comment about it being about the environment gave me a thought. I used freehand crop to take a little sky out and a little of the bottom of the picture out too. Then I added to fast local contrast, modified a little bit, to the land to darken it a little. I’m happiest with that because it keeps the entire horizon, but pulls the boats a little closer. I like the looks of this so much that even though I didn’t take the photo, I’d like to hang it on my wall.

Thanks for the feedback, and the photo!

Yeah, it’s a shame you have to lose so much of the beautiful landscape to hold onto some balance in the vertical crop, but I think its a worthwhile tradeoff to get rid of the gate and chicken wire fence at the top of the ramp.

A few steps to the right might have helped get rid of it, but then you’d start to obscure the floating dock and cramp the boats a little too much.

I suppose painting the fence out wouldn’t be that difficult either if you had to, but I certainly didn’t feel like doing it lol.
