How to get the latest DK in Ubuntu

So,

I’m a fairly neophyte linux user.

I did a apt-get install digikam and got version 7.1.

What do I need to do to get v8.1?

Really prefer not to use appimage, flatpak, etc as I’ve struggled with user permissions with those types of installs.

thanks

Operating system?

Elementary OS actually, which is an Ubuntu variant.

Iirc, the appimage doesn’t have the sandbox issues from flatpak. I’ve never had problems using the appimage version (but under Opensuse). Then again, SQlite is sufficient for my needs, so that removes one external dependency.

Otherwise, you could try the OBS, if you know what version of Ubuntu your distribution follows (but no guarantees), or compile your own version. I’d try the appimage first (with prior backup of the databases, the database layout has changed between versions 7.x and 8.x)

The answer

Well, I’d have thought the normal Ubuntu repository would be preferred. There, they are up to version 8.0.0 afaik.
And, you still need to know which version of Ubuntu your Elementary OS is based on…

Good luck.

Hello, I have Digikam 7.1, 8.0 and 8.1 on my Xubunto 22.04 pc, all appimages and they work all fine.

Well, that didn’t work out. Digging deeper, the DK v was 7.1.

So I installed from the EOS applications. This seems to have done the trick.

The more I futz with EOS, the more it antagonizes me.

Thanks

Elementary uses flatpaks now, so you’re likely getting the version from flathub.
