How to Produced the Equivalent of a Bleached Print in Software

OK, we had a go at bleaching prints and I managed to get this, which I quite like:

This is from the original - https://www.flickr.com/photos/10983076@N08/43759432222/in/album-72157682357742584/

The problem is that you have very little control, you get what you get and it is different each time. Plus the fact that using and disposing of bleach is not particularly pleasant.

So the question is, can one get a similar effect with software and if so, what software and how?

My dusty memory says that Nik Software has/had a filter called Bleach Bypass.
duckduckgo for it

Have fun!

You could maybe do it by hand, take an airbrush in Gimp, say, white (or whatever colour), and gently go over the image until you have what you want. (Your hands and brain, not someone else’s algorithm!)

Hi Colin,

You can use GIMP or Krita for that. In both programs you can paint by yourself or use premade textures to blend with the photo.
Depending on what you want to achieve, you can use different blend modes (e.g. hard light, overlay, grain merge, etc.) and with the help of masks you can control blending.

Examples:

GIMP with ready-made texture:

Krita with self-painted texture:
