How / where does shotwell store its 'library'

I have installed two different versions:

  • 0.30.10 via Flatpak
  • 0.30.7 via official repository (because flatpak version is broken)

I edited a few photos in 0.30.10 as a test, and then went to 0.30.7 to see if the edits would appear there. Nothing. Even with the option to save metadata to files, there’s no metadata (e.g. tags or ratings) showing through

Where does shotwell store its library?

I’m bashing my head against a wall trying to find a nice simple DAM that has good UX. I tried darktable, but my oh my is the UX terrible. I really like shotwell for its speed and simplicity, but looks like it is tended occasionally by a 1 person team.

The flatpak is sandboxed, so it keeps its settings in a place separate from the rest of the system: ~/.var/app/<something like org.shotwell.Shotwell/config/shotwell … or something like that.

Thanks, that makes sense now. It also makes sense as to why the flatpak version can’t access apps like external editors.

Flatpak can access other binaries, but you need to give explicit permission.

How does one do that?

Check out the app Flatseal from flathub, which is a GUI permissions manager for flatpak.

Ok thank you, I downloaded that and now investigating how to add the right path.

Do I just add path to the applications folder, wherever that is?
