OK, i can sort by fileextension and only mark the RAW files.
But is there a way to automatically import the RAW files into the
/Pictures/Year/Jobcode/ folder and the JPG files into the
/Pictures/Year/Jobcode/JPG/ folder?
The RAW files must be in a folder with the job code, otherwise Darktable won’t name the film roll with the job code.
However, the JPGs should be in a separate folder.
Not currently. If you file a bug report I can label it as a feature request. It would be really helpful if you explain the film roll feature and why it’s important to have the RAW files structured like this (I don’t use darktable).
A more general option might be to have a toggle to simply ignore all JPEGs when doing a download, rather than sticking them in a separate folder.
These two options are different and can both be implemented, of course, but I’m unsure how niche the need to put JPEGs in their own folder is. I don’t want to add too much complexity to the program if only a few people will use it.
Thank you for the quick response!
Darktable imports and manages images in “film rolls.” This is inspired by the old analog film ![]()
The name of the Darktable “film roll” is always the name of the folder where the images are stored!
When I import images from the camera using RPD and use the following folder structure, all my RAW files end up in the ORF subfolder and all JPG files in the JPG subfolder
<Image date (YYYY)>/<Image date (YYYY)>-<Image date (MM)> <Job code>/<Extension (Original Case)>
When I then import the RAW files into Darktable, the film rolls are always named ORF. This is the name of the Sourcefolder. I can’t change the names of the film rolls in Darktable. It’s always set to the folder name.
Here’s how I handle it: I’ve defined two subfolder templates in RDP:
For RAW: <Image date (YYYY)>/<Image date (YYYY)>-<Image date (MM)> <Job code>
For JPG: <Image date (YYYY)>/<Image date (YYYY)>-<Image date (MM)> <Job code>/<Extension (Original Case)>
I first select only the RAW files and use the first template. And in the second step, I select only JPG and use the second template.
Perhaps one option would be to add an optional filter for the file type in the templates.
If no filter is specified, all files will be imported as before. If the filter *.ORF is set for a template, only those files will be included. For users who don’t use the filter, nothing changes!
There will still be two import steps, but I won’t have to manually select the files by file type in the main window.
Sorry, I forgot to answer that question.
I like to keep my file system organized. I’d like to store RAW and JPG files in the same job code folder. However, I don’t want the RAW and JPG files to be stored side by side. That’s why I’m creating a subfolder for JPGs.
