I see that in an earlier post here, related to this topic, another user claimed to be in charge of asking silly questions. I won’t contest that, but just claim that I am in charge of asking the silliest questions, like:
I’ve downloaded the G’MIC-Qt plug-in for GIMP 3.0 from gmic.eu/download (correct download source, yes?) and have file ‘gmic_3.5.5_gimp3.0_ubuntu25-04_plucky_amd64.zip’ which, after unzipping, gives me file ‘gmic_gimp_qt’. What do I do with this ? (civilised answers only, please).
Subsidiary question: does it matter that the only (zipped) binary I could find at gmic.eu was for Ubuntu 25.04? Will this run under Min 22.1 (based on Ubuntu 24.04)?
According to Ubuntu – Details of package gimp in noble , the version of GIMP packages for Ubuntu 24.04 (noble) is GIMP 2.10.36, not GIMP 3.
So my first question would be : how did you install GIMP 3 for Linux Mint 22.1 ?
If it’s not by using the official packages (e.g. using flatpak, appimage or whatever), I’m afraid you won’t find something that works from the G’MIC official site.
We don’t build binary versions of the G’MIC-Qt plug-in for non-standard GIMP installations.
Personnally, I don’t know how to install the G’MIC-Qt plug-in for the Appimage version of GIMP 3. The chances the binary we provide on the G’MIC webpage can be useful for you are then very slight.
Having the G’MIC plug-in for GIMP 2.10.36 is indeed easy, with the binaries we provide on the G’MIC webpage.
But for the GIMP 3 appimage version, I can’t really tell.
It’s probably possible, but it’s up to the appimage maintainer, not me.
My apologies if it seemed that I was expecting you to take responsibility for the correct functioning of G’MIC with an AppImage version of GIMP. What I am trying to achieve is to arrive at a working installation of G’MIC, hopefully at version 3.5.x or better, in GIMP 3.0.4, under Linux 22.1.
(Use of an AppImage version of GIMP is immaterial, other than it might be the only binary of version 3.0.4 that is available. I do not wish to use the flatpak version).
Given my limited knowledge, what I am hoping to get, by posting on this most helpful of forums, is an affirmation that my current understanding, as follows, is correct:
Without building from source, no version of the G’MIC plug-in, at any version level, is available for GIMP at version 3.0.4 under Mint 22.1, where that version of GIMP is available only as an AppImage (or flatpak).
The G’MIC plug-in for GIMP is available and functioning in Mint 22.1, but only for GIMP 2.10.36 and for G’MIC version not greater than 2.9.4.
The stand-alone version of G’MIC, at version 3.5.5, is available (as a .deb), installable and functioning in Mint 22.1 (Ubuntu 24.04) but it is unclear how it can be used with layers as it appears that only a single image at a time can be opened.
No worry, I was just saying the unfortunately, the solution to your issue is not as simple as downloading one of the pre-defined binary from the G’MIC website.
Sorry about that.
There’s an option --layers for gmic_qt that you may want to try. Not sure it does what you expect though.
The image shows exactly the configuration I would like to achieve. I have the AppImage of GIMP 3.0.4 installed and running in Mint 22.1. I have the stand-alone version of G’MIC 3.5.5 installed and running. What I don’t have is a suitable G’MIC 3.5.x plug-in for GIMP 3.0.4.
OK, new day, I tried an explation in an earlier post. To keep it short, while the gimp.org appimage is a great piece of work, it is made in a peculiar version of Debian 12 and a gimp_gmic_qt needs to be compiled in that version.
It is a bit easier (at the moment) with 'buntu and its spin offs and you can get that appimage and the plugin here: Gimp 3.0.4 AppImage
Yes, you did, for which I thank you. But, because I am of limited intellect, your explanation went straight over my head. Your second attempt at increasing my level of understanding is satisfyingly effective: I now have a version of GIMP 3.0.4 with G’MIC 3.5.5 installed and functioning under Mint 22.1. Your support is most gratefully acknowledged.
