Installing MAcport so I can install GIMP

Hello. I am trying to download Macport for MAC OS Big Sur 11.6.3 so I can install GIMP.
I installed Macport. I restarted the computer and when I double click the icon, it goes back to the install window. Macport people won’t help me.
Is there any way to install GIMP without using Macport? 25 year photoshop user here looking for something else.

macports operates from the command line, as far as I know.

Why not try the new 3.0 RC1? They provide an installer: GIMP - Development Downloads

Thanks I’ll try it without Macports, but everything I read here says I have to install Macports first.

Hi,

After installing Macport, you should type following command from terminal.

sudo port install gimp

Do not click Macport icon.

https://ports.macports.org/port/gimp/

Thanks. I typed sudo port install gimp, closed the window, restarted the computer and nothing. Every time I double click in GIMP 2.10 install, which is in the applications folder, a window comes up with a crossed out fox, then a white arrow pointing left to a folder titled applications. When I click on that folder, it takes me back to the applications folder where the installer is.

@kneelocoveproduction You probably got misinformed. Unless you have a not supported macOS version (which are pre-macOS 11), you just need to download the .dmg linked in Installing MAcport so I can install GIMP - #2 by paperdigits, install the .app bundle and GIMP will just work. I did it, everyone does this.

I saw the GIMP version 3.0.0-RC1 (2024-11-04) but it says it’s developemental and there could be glitches. I was trying to download the ver. 2 for MACs.
So you say Ver 3 is ok to use?

Why not simply use the gimp.org stable 2.10.38 package?
They write: * Supported OS: macOS 10.13 High Sierra or newer

I would like to install the 2.10 version, but GIMP says I have to install MacPorts first. I tried to download GIMP, but it didn’t work. I guess I am going to have to pay for PS:(

or file an issue at the gimp project (GIMP - Bugs) - if an issue isn’t reported it won’t be fixed
I doubt that requires a macports or homebrew installation except if you want to installer build it via macports or homebrew …

This is a response I got to my email.

I downloaded Macports and installed it, did a restart, but it keeps
going back to the install window when I try to open the program. Using
MAC 11.6.3 Big Sur.

"Even though this has nothing to do with Mailman and I should just ignore
it, the current MacPorts installer is incompatible with Big Sur. See
The MacPorts Project -- Download & Installation and get
https://github.com/macports/macports-base/releases/download/v2.10.4/MacPorts-2.10.4-11-BigSur.pkg. "

still doesn’t work…
