You don’t. We host a bunch of stuff for a bunch of projects. Money goes where it is needed. That was one of the oroginal reasons for starting this, to have a common place for photographers ans FOSS. If you’re not OK with that, then you do not need to donate to pixls.
Darktable wants your time and participation anyway, not your money.
Early on, when we were first getting started, a community member graciously donated what we needed for server costs for a couple of years. I covered some costs for a little while until we actually put up a donations page and we started getting supporters.
It’s been a long time that the community has covered the costs for us and continues to do so, but I’ll reiterate what I said over 10 (!!!) years ago: I’ll continue to cover costs as needed into the future, even without donations.
Consolidating into the single beefy server helps keep costs down, but honestly the real cost savings come from having a darix as sysadmin, mica and myself doing what we need to, and mica + the other mods (and admins) keeping things running as smoothly as they can!
All the hard work and dedication from the teams to keep providing these tools is the real heartbeat here. Maybe one day when I hit the lottery I can rent us a nice beach somewhere to have an annual photo-geek walk for a week. 
Can you give us an update on this? No rush, no pressure, just wondering if anything is moving here…
No update just yet, I’m sorry. It seems to be a bit risky legally in Germany, where I live. I’m still figuring that one out.
Hello, donations are used solely to fund the hosting of our French forum, darktable.fr, but they are currently suspended as we have already received enough to cover hosting costs for the next 10 years.
Thanks for your reply, @Costalfy. It would be nice to have the whole darktable funding story (i.e., who pays for what, where donations - when enabled - go, etc.) in one central place, as I am pretty sure that similar questions will come up again and again.
This has been discussed in this forum before, several times. So a central place to gather all funding information would probably be just as usefull as those threads (most do not use the search function here).
Apart from that, I don’t see we have any particular right (or need) to know who pays for what wrt. darktable, as the project does not get any public funding.
That was not my point. There are websites that (appear to) collect money on behalf of darktable. People may donate to these websites thinking that they are contributing to darktable, whereas they are actually contributing to something else.
