Is it possible to contribute with a donation to DT?

Hi,

Branching from this post by @Qor:

Is there a way to contribute with a donation to DT, for hosting costs, buying beers to the devs and what not?

I looked on darktable.org but I could not find this information.

I see that there is a system in place to donate to darktable.fr but I am not sure what is the relation between that and darktable.org.

Thanks,

Edit: I noticed this on https://en.liberapay.com/darktable.fr/donate

So maybe that is the right channel in the end?

You can donate to pixls.us:

Thanks, I did that already.

Ok, fair enough. I am still curious, though. Who pays for hosting, domain registration etc.?

BTW, if the donations sent through https://en.liberapay.com/darktable.fr/donate are not actually reaching the DT devs, then someone should do something about it.

Just an Idea: If the contributors to darktable would like they could choose a charity to which people could donate in their name.

My understanding is that pixls does pretty much all the hosting that darktable requires

Interesting, thanks!

If that is the case, let me reiterate that people that search the web for ways to donate probably end up finding https://en.liberapay.com/darktable.fr/donate (as I did), and they may donate there (which I did not) because it explicitly mentions the darktable-org github repo.

According to it, at the time of writing this is collecting ~14 USD per week, which is not huge but it’s still something.

If this eventually is funneled into pixls.us then it’s great, otherwise maybe this information should be made more prominent on the website and/or darktable-org affiliation should be removed from the aforementioned liberpay campaign.

Who would know for sure? Maybe @paperdigits or @Pascal_Obry?

That would be AurƩlien Pierre, I suspect. Seems like he never did something about that when he left.

Edit: Actually it’s probably darktable.fr that gets the money.

Edit 2: Or maybe not: https://en.liberapay.com/darktable.fr/income/payments

Thanks!

Yup, it’s all going to two accounts: Andy_Costanza and aurelienpierre.

Interestingly, Aurelien’s account is closed, so I don’t know what they are actually doing with the funds.

This gets more and more confusing

Edit: Actually, Andy Costanza is also here on pixl.us: @Costalfy, so maybe he can help us shed some light on this topic.

Yes, puxls pays for domains and we have a beefy server for this forum and some other stuff we host, including whatever darktable needs. We take donations from the community to accomplish this. We have been fortunate enough for several years that one person said ā€œwhat’s your hosting costs for the year?ā€ And then donated that. Otherwise @patdavid is OK paying it out of pocket, though I’m not sure he’s ever had to.

Maybe this is already discussed… would donations be helpful to cover the cost for signing the Mac and windows binaries?

We have offered to cover that, and we, puxls, have done so for RawTherapee, but nobody wants to register with those companies for darktable.

Good, resist enshittification! :fist:

Well, I do agree on most things that Apple and Windows are ā€˜enshittifiying’ (Microsoft seems only doing AI nonsense) nowadays. But the signing of binaries brings an added security layer. I would just wish that they would provide free accounts for proven foss.

Also at this point is just a bit of annoying thing… hope that they would’t start to actually force it.

BTW, does anybody know how Gimp this is doing? Or isn’t this something that puxls can do multiple software packages?

I am not against signing binaries in principle, as long as (1) it is an open system where everybody can sign binaries for free and without arbitrary exclusions, and (2) I am still free to run whatever I want on my hardware, signed or not.

Sadly, (1) has already been violated, and (2) may not last much longer.

They’re registered and they sell in the microsoft store. So does Krita.

This is a bit awkward. When I donate to Pixls, how do I know DT will be supported and my funds are not being used for some other FOSS. Not that I have anything against a particular software, but my intent is to support DT first

On clicking on donate, and selecting a donation link, it immediately takes me to paypal page. So I’m not sure what the donation will be used for. I have hesitated to take it forward because of this

I would be open to building signed binaries for MacOS, and paying for whatever developer credentials are necessary. But I’ll have to investigate first what that would entail exactly. If nobody else wants to step up, I’d be happy to contribute to Darktable this way.

That is very nice!

Pretty sure you only need to register with Microsoft if you want to publish on the Microsoft Store. To simply appease SmartScreen there are two methods, only one of which requires a Microsoft account:

Of course, but some use Apple. Last I heard, that’s a different company :stuck_out_tongue:
