your thoughts are absolutely in the right direction. That photo shows one of our Nordic ancestors, probably scared stiff because he had spotted the camera. His dryads, being a few hundred years younger, had time to hide in the background.

I used two pieces of software: darktable (dev version) and The Gimp/g’mic combination.
Apart from my standard medicine (local contrast and equalizer), Darktable’s color balance module produced the color balance (!!! what else???), and I used Gimp/g’mic for cropping and framing.
