Issue with Floating Selection Layer when Using Tools in GIMP 2.79

Hi everyone,

I’m a computer teacher who teaches GIMP 2.8 to middle school students. Recently, my students have been encountering floating selection layers when using various tools like the scale tool, perspective tool, etc. I understand that copy and paste can cause a floating selection layer, but I’m unsure why they are experiencing it with other tools. I do know how to deal with it when it occurs, but I would like to prevent it from happening altogether. Could anyone please provide insights into why this might be happening and how to avoid it?

You do not have paste for that to happen, a copy action on its own will result in a Floating Selection (Transformation) temporary layer.

If it is the whole image then no selection and use Image → Transform → Arbitary rotation.
